Thiruvananthapuran is often referred by travellers as a conservative place or a ‘sleepy town, but not anymore. There is going to be a huge retail revolution the city with an influx of more malls and outlets of international brands over the next couple of years. The main development will take palce from Chackai to Kazhakoottam and this IT coridor is already been branded as the ‘New Trivandrum’.
The opening of the “Mall of Travancore” last week was considered to be the first step towards a major retail revolution in the city. Earlier, youngsters were reluctant to come to the city due to the lack of leisure and entertainment facilities, but with the new openings more and more people are expected to come to Trivandrum.
When completed, the “Mall of Travancore” is expected to look like this.
Four Shopping Malls to come up in Trivandrum
Apart from the Mall of Travancore, by Malabar group at Chackai near Trivandrum International Airport, one another mall by Artech relators is set to open at Pattoor, which is very close to the bypass road. Sources said the commercial space of the Artech group has been leased out by the Future group to start its retail branch ‘Central’ in the city. It is expected to be opened in May. The total development area is around one lakh sq ft across basement+ground+ four upper floors.
The third one Lulu Mall project at Akkulam and the fourth will be the Embassy Taurus World Technology Centre at Technopark phase- III campus. The LuLu Mall is expected to open in November 2019, which is a mall-cum-hotel project. The upcoming Lulu Mall has a total investment of over Rs 2,000 crore and is expected to generate about 5,000 jobs. It will be coming up in over 20 acres of land. It will also feature 200 international brands, the Lulu Hypermarket, food courts, ice skating rink, a nine-screen multiplex, entertainment centre for kids, and parking space for 3,000 cars.

The Taurus downtown project includes a 175 key business hotel to be operated by Hilton and the first phase of Taurus project is expected to be completed in 2020. The office space to be branded as Embassy Taurus World Technology Centre will also have plug-and-play facilities for startups and small businesses. On completion, Taurus Downtown is expected to generate 35,000 direct employment and about 75,000 indirect employment.
